Weathering scale models with paints and pastel chalks is a very easy process and I will take you through some simple steps to help create a very realistic looking model that you can be proud of. It’s really is easy to do, and if you don’t like your results, or the weathering is too heavy, you can easily remove the chalks, or repaint the model.

First and foremost, you want to start with a finished model that has had at least 48 hours of drying time for any new paint to dry. This is essential for the first step and will allow the diluted paint to flow onto the model, and not mix with your fresh paint job.

Here is a list of items you will need to get started:

  1. Your favorite enamel paint, and a bottle of thinner (I prefer Floquil paints)

    Colors should include:

    • Grimy Black (dark grey)
    • Black
    • Mud
    • Dust White along with any other colors you may find suitable.

  2. 1/4" wide firm bristle paint brush such as a Plaid brand 1/4" "scruffy" or equivalent (for chalks)
  3. 1/8" wide brush "scruffy" (for chalks)
  4. No. 2 round brush (for paint)

Note:Always keep your paint brushes, and chalk brushes separate.....i.e...never use your chalk brush for paint

  5. Earth tone pastel chalk set, or any brand of powdered chalks
  6. Grey tone Pastel chalk set
  7. Flat finish spray can
  8. And finally, your finger tips

Now let’s jump right in and have some fun !!
